Juan Bolivar Gonzalez
Juan was a post-doc working on the p7 viroporin of the hepatitis C virus. He joined the team strongly motivated by the latest research in the lab which started to reveal p7 as a complex protein whose activity and structure are greatly affected by its lipid environment. In collaboration with the group of Prof. A. Watts in the Biochemistry Department, Juan used a combination of biophysical techniques to elucidate how lipids influence p7 and to understand how antiviral drugs interact with the viroporin in the context of the membrane.
Juan studied Biology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, where he also obtained a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology working in the group of Dr. T. Caldés in the University Hospital Clínico San Carlos. He then moved to the U.K. with a Marie Curie Fellowship from the European Commission to obtain his PhD on membrane protein research at the University of Southampton. During his PhD Juan studied lipid interactions with the potassium channel KcsA in the group of Prof A. Lee (Southampton), working also in collaboration with Dr. D. Marsh at the Max Plank Institute for Biophysicial Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany.
